What is Cowhide? Cowhide is the natural, unbleached skin and hair of a cow. It retains the original coloring of the animal. Cowhides are a natural by-product of the food industry obtained from cattle. In the tannery a traditional hair on hide tanning method is employed to ensure that the hide is soft. It ensures that the cowhide will last longer. It is then naturally dried and hand selected for best visual on the LC4. Due to the natural state of the hide, the actual coloration on each item will vary from the image. LE CORBUSIER LC4 HISTORY The Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge (LC4) is the best known and most successful of Le Corbusier's original designs of the 1920's. The chair first exhibited at the Salon D' Automne in 1929. The Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge (LC4) was designed in 1928 with the efforts of not just the individual's name that is attributed to the chair but rather a group effort with much influence from Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand. The LC4 was originally commissioned for the furnishing of a single villa in the Ville d' Avray, a commune in the western suburbs of Paris, France. The LC4 Chaise Lounge, AKA the “relaxing machine,” is a lounge that mirrors the body's natural curves while appearing to float above its supports. The frame easily positions on the base using gravity and the users own weight to create various reclining positions. History of the Designer, Le Corbusier Le Corbusier born in 1887 was a Swiss architect, designer, urbanist, writer and painter. He is famous for being one of the pioneers of what now is called Modern architecture or the International style. He began experimenting with furniture design in 1928. His cousin, Pierre Jeanneret collaborated on many of the designs. In 1928, Le Corbusier and Perriand began to put the expectations for furniture Le Corbusier into practice. The first results of the collaboration were chrome-plated tubular steel chairs designed for two of his projects, The Maison la Roche in Paris and a pavilion for Barbara and Henry Church. The most famous of these chairs and sofa sets are the now-iconic Le Corbusier LC-2, LC-3 and LC-4. LC-2 & LC-3 are similar in design with the LC-2 being the small version and the LC-3 the larger version. Le Corbusier LC-4 is the famous Chaise Lounge.
